Global paper device shipments show double-digit year-over-year decline in third quarter 2021, according to IDC

NEEDHAM, Mass .– (BUSINESS WIRE) –# HardcopyPeripherals– The global paper devices market declined 20.4% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2021 (3Q21) to reach nearly 21 million units shipped. Manufacturing constraints and logistics issues were the main reasons most brands did not have enough inventory to fulfill orders. The value of shipments also fell 11.0% year-over-year in the quarter to $ 9.2 billion, according to new data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker.

The notable highlights of the quarter are as follows:

  • Epson and Kyocera Group were the top performers among the top 5 companies, with respective increases of 0.9% and 9.8% year-over-year. Epson continued to expand in the ink tank market while Kyocera saw significant laser growth in the European market.

  • Inkjet shipments in the Asia / Pacific region (excluding Japan and China) were the least impacted by stock availability and logistical constraints. The region was down 4.8% year-on-year with more than 2.2 million units shipped in the quarter.

  • On a sequential basis, the Asia / Pacific region (excluding Japan and PRC) saw an increase of 12.6% in inkjet shipments and 10.8% for laser. Many vendors still faced production challenges due to the semiconductor shortage. However, due to better inventory allocation for their channels, the region’s inkjet and laser markets performed better than last quarter.
