Jensen Ackles Explains How ‘The Winchesters’ Connect to Supernatural Canon

The driver for the Supernatural prequel, The Winchestersis in production right now, and Dean Winchester himself, Jensen Ackles, sheds some light on how the new show about his character’s parents will fit into the established narrative in Supernaturalwhich ended after 15 seasons last year.

For those in need of a refresh, the original CW show established that Dean and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester’s parents both had monster-hunting backgrounds. Their mother, Mary, came from a family of monster hunters, while their father, John, had ties to men of letters. Established canon, however, also had John in the dark about demons and the like until Mary died.

“Obviously we have a massive solution for this,” Ackles said in a recent interview with TVLine about John supposedly ignorant of monster hunting until later. “But we get to that point, and we play like ‘Ooh, that’s why’.”

Crafting a story that meets the mythology of the original show in a creative way is also part of what Ackles says made the project interesting. “That’s kind of what’s exciting, in my opinion, is that waypoints or tent poles that have been established on the mothership, as we lovingly call it, those will be affected” , explained Ackles. “We will arrive at these waypoints in a way that we probably did not expect. And that’s what we’re really having fun with, it’s like the story is falling into place. This is not the washed version. It’s not the sugar-coated version of how mom and dad met. What’s this really come.”

Hopefully we can find out what really happened when the show airs on The CW. The series, which stars Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger as Mary and John Winchester, currently only has a pilot order. Ackles – who will also narrate the show – is optimistic that he will be reprized for the series, however, and that he might even direct an episode or two. “Obviously I have to be approved by the studio, but I think they know me, so maybe I have a good chance,” he said with a laugh.
