Warning! Contains an overview of Darth Vader #23

A preview for Marvel dark Vador series proves that by Luke Skywalker most important moment of Return of the Jedi is weakened by the new cannon. Set after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader was confronted by a ghost from his past in the form of Sabé, the former servant and decoy of his late wife Padmé Amidala. Not only does she now know about his past as Anakin Skywalker, but she also motivates Vader to walk the path of redemption long before Luke tried to redeem his father.

Previously in dark Vador from Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco, Lord Vader rooted out the Crimson Dawn agents who integrated into all levels of the Empire. Seeking order, the Dark Lord has been relentless in his quest and seems resigned to his role as the Emperor’s fist after Palpatine recently revealed his true power and plans on the hidden world of Exegol. This was prompted by Vader’s imbalance in the dark side after reviewing the death of his wife and the birth of his son Luke. During his investigation, Vader discovered a partial holo-recording of Padmé’s last words and her belief that there was still good in him despite his dark side corruption.

While Darth Vader’s search for answers was her first encounter with Sabé, she was kept busy after Vader spared her life. Not only did she join Crimson Dawn, but she also found the same holo-message that allowed her to deduce the truth that Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader are one. While Sabé had kept the knowledge of Vader’s greatest secret to herself even after she began working for the Dark Lord, the new preview of Darth Vader #23 finally sees her reveal her hand. She then uses Padmé’s last words and the memory of Vader’s own mother, Shmi Skywalker, in order to convince him to help a group of refugees oppressed by Crimson Dawn. If Vader agrees, the issue will likely see Luke’s role in redeeming his father weakened after such great strides made by Sabé before Return of the Jedi even begins. DARTH VADER #23 – SHADOW OF SHADOWAn epic new story begins as DARTH VADER embarks on a new mission in partnership with a nemesis, but who leads who to doom? And what happens when the SHADOW QUEEN uncovers the Dark Lord of the Sith’s deepest secret? Plus: the shocking return of a face from Vader’s most distant past!

Seeing that these refugees were once slaves on Tatooine that Sabé freed, she gives the Dark Lord the chance to prove to Padmé that there is still good in Vader while honoring his mother. This will essentially mean that the groundwork for Vader’s redemption was already laid by Sabé before Luke attempted to join his father in the Battle of Endor. While the new canon certainly bolsters Vader’s overall story arc through the original trilogy compared to his past in the prequel trilogy, there’s no denying that it comes at the expense of one of Luke Skywalker’s greatest moments. .

Consequently, it seems that star wars fans might be split on whether this new chapter in Darth Vader’s story is worth diminishing Luke’s role in Return of the Jedi. Whereas luke skywalker is still the one who finally brings his father back, he’s no longer solely responsible for Darth Vader’s redemption thanks to Sabé bringing his past to the fore in this new issue. Full Darth Vader #23 comes out June 1.
