North Cheyenne Canon reopens June 4

COLORADO SPRINGS — North Cheyenne Canon Park is scheduled to open Saturday, June 4. “People are very excited to get back out there and enjoy the canyon this summer,” said Scott Abbott of Colorado Springs Parks. The popular open-air park in Colorado Springs was closed to vehicles last October.

A bonus with the opening are new updated trails to explore. “It was created at the same time as the canyon was closed,” Abbott said, “So a large majority of our visitors haven’t experienced those trails yet.”

The main project was to replace three bridges in the canyon. The new bridges have structural improvements to meet the demands of heavy vehicles like fire trucks.

The road is now ready for traffic, but finishing works are still in progress. “We certainly ask people to understand that the construction project is not completely 100% complete,” Abbott said. Workers will be working at or near the roadside throughout June.

Another precaution concerns parking in the canyon. There is still equipment and materials at some stops and parking areas. “We ask you not to get creative with your parking. Park only at designated stops and designated parking areas,” Abbott said, “What happens is once one person starts parking along our roadway, many more follow the example. The canyon road is so narrow that emergency vehicle access can be impeded when vehicles park on the side of the road.
