Shepherd among five Blue Devils at a local Epson event this week

KINSTON, North Carolina – After hosting the US Women’s Open last week in North Carolina State, the Epson Tour travels to Kinston, North Carolina from June 9-12 at the Kinston Country Club this week. A field of 144 golfers will play 72 holes in stroke play for $200,000 and a winner’s share of $30,000. A cut will be made to the top 60 competitors plus ties after 36 holes.

In the third year of the Carolina Golf Classic, former Duke All-American Ana Belac won the inaugural event in 2020 for her first professional win en route to earning her LPGA Tour card.

Shepherd, a native of Greenwood, Ind., will be competing in his eighth professional event in his amateur career and the second Epson Tour tournament. She shot rounds of 74, 70 and 75 for a 6-over-par, 219, at the 2021 Donald Ross Classic en route to a tie for 61st on the Epson Tour. Shepherd was a two-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-America selection for the Blue Devils.

On the 2022 Epson Tour money list, Duke presents Gina Kim ($38,526) in sixth, Beck ($25,596) in 14th, Boonchant ($16,301) in 32nd and Duncan ($10,699) in 49th. At the last Epson Tour event, Kim won her first professional tournament with an 11-under-par score at the Inova Mission Inn Resort and Club Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Duke is the only women’s golf program to feature a winner on both the LPGA and Epson Tour in 2022. Leona Maguire won the LPGA Drive on Championship in February and Kim won the Inova Mission Inn Resort and Club Championship.

On Thursday, Shepherd will start things at 7:30 a.m. from the No. 10 hole, while Wang will start from the No. 10 at 8:03 a.m. Boonchant will play No. 1 at 8:14 a.m., Beck at 8:25 a.m., off No. 1 and Duncan at 8:36 a.m., on No. 1.
