The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H is a rental with more than 900 HP

  • Hertz and Shelby American have a three-year partnership and will feature a pair of hopped-up Mustangs.
  • The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H is a 900+ horsepower Hertz rental that pays homage to the 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H.
  • Shelby will also outfit less powerful Ford Mustang GT models in GT-H badged ponies.

It’s 1966 and you can’t afford a Shelby Mustang GT350 but you want to go hit a runway. Well, Hertz offered a Rent-A-Racer program that would let you slip behind the wheel of a special car. Shelby Mustang delivered by Hertz for just $17 a day. Those days may be long gone, but the idea of renting a high-performance pony car from Hertz is apparently alive and well. Hertz is rolling a new fleet of hopped-up Mustangs through its showrooms in the legendary Hertz Mustang livery.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H might be a mouthful, but that’s just a long way of saying you want a 900+ hp Mustang. As the name suggests, this Mustang is based on the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and most will sport the iconic gold stripes that tell the world this is a special Hertz edition. Although based on the 760hp GT500, this Hertz edition sees a larger supercharger, cat-back exhaust and a few other performance tweaks to squeeze more power from the 5.2-liter V8.

Hertz is not only bringing the GT500 into the fold of this three-year deal with Shelby. Shelby will also add a few Ford Mustang GT-based examples to the company’s fleet. These might not be as powerful as the GT500-H models, but with 450 hp on the job: it must still be fun.

Now you may not be able to rent any of these if you don’t live near relatively limited markets. According to Shelby, the GT500-H will be available in Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix and Tampa. The GT-H will be available in Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco and Tampa. Worse still, it looks like only 25 examples of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H will see production, with Shelby saying 19 will wear the iconic black and gold livery, including six in white and gold.

Even if it seems limited, it will make some holidays much more exciting.
